Geelong Food Relief was established in 1990 and assists those in need of Emergency Food Relief within the Geelong community.
GFRC provides food assistance to clients who are suffering from food insecurity. Clients are referred by agencies through a food voucher system, with food voucher redemption occurring at GFRC mini-marts in Geelong. Every year more than 14,500 families use the centres, equating to more than 36,000 adults and children.
Early this week, I advised that GFRC would be suspending its traditional operations and preparing to support the distribution within the Geelong Region of hampers prepared by Food Bank Victoria in collaboration with Red Cross Geelong. While the Red Cross hamper program is a welcome initiative, it is not necessarily targeting the clients within our region, regularly supported by GFRC and its’ partners. The Geelong Food Relief Centre has been providing Emergency Food to those in need for 29 years. Working in conjunction with welfare agencies, this year 37,000 individuals will be referred to Geelong Food Relief Centre for Emergency Food Relief.
