Geelong Food Relief was established in 1990 and assists those in need of Emergency Food Relief within the Geelong community.
GFRC provides food assistance to clients who are suffering from food insecurity. Clients are referred by agencies through a food voucher system, with food voucher redemption occurring at GFRC mini-marts in Geelong. Every year more than 14,500 families use the centres, equating to more than 36,000 adults and children.
The “most significant grant” in Geelong Food Relief Centre’s 30-year history will take efforts to feed those in need “to the next level”, according to centre chief executive Collin Peebles.
The centre this week received a $700,000 share of a $3.5 million state government investment in food relief hubs for five regional Victorian cities.
The announcement comes after construction began just before Christmas on a $1.7 million council renovation of the Geelong centre, scheduled for completion in April…

When mother-of-three Jo Barr read about The Local Buyers Club’s Trick or Eat campaign for Hackney Foodbank, she loved the idea so much that she decided to run the initiative in her home town of Barwon Heads, Australia (in aid of Geelong Food Relief Centre).
Geelong Food Relief Centre CEO Collin Peebles is passionate about helping people in need. Collin manages about 90 volunteers and works alongside them so that 37,000 people each year have enough to eat. He also spends his own time giving presentations to groups and clubs to boost support for the centre.
Westfield Local Heroes are nominated and voted for by their communities, with the three top finalists per Westfield centre each awarded a $10,000 grant for their affiliated organisation. If Collin is successful, the Geelong Food Relief Centre will use its grant to help fund a new forklift trolley…

Early this week, I advised that GFRC would be suspending its traditional operations and preparing to support the distribution within the Geelong Region of hampers prepared by Food Bank Victoria in collaboration with Red Cross Geelong. While the Red Cross hamper program is a welcome initiative, it is not necessarily targeting the clients within our region, regularly supported by GFRC and its’ partners.
